Running a web design company is only good if you can actually find clients. It’s not enough to be able to create websites if there aren’t any clients to create them for. Getting your initial clients is much easier than you think if you are willing to put in the work.
I would like to share how we got Kreonovo off the ground when we didn’t have any clients.
The key to most business success is creating a quality service or product that sells itself. This means if you can get local web design clients and make them happy with your service they will tell their friends about you. Referrals will be the lifeblood of your business. In this post I will share some strategies about how to get local web design clients for your business.
Graft Your Way To Clients
If you are willing to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty the following few strategies will be guaranteed to get you local web design clients.
Start within your circle
If you already have a few clients don’t be afraid to call them once in a while and ask for referrals. Explain to your clients that you stay in business through referrals and a shout out will keep you in business. If you have established a good relationship with your clients there should be no reason for them to say no. Try to call twice a year and not pester your clients every month for referrals. What often happens is at the time of the call your client might not have a referral for you but, you have planted a small seed in their mind and they will be sure to remember your name the next time a friend asks them about a website.
What if you don’t have clients yet? The next best thing is talking to your friends and family. Someone is bound to have their own business, work for a company that needs a website or knows a client in their circle that needs a website. If you can land a client be sure to deliver top notch services (your services should always be top notch) then ask your new happy client for referrals.
Find local business in your area without a website
Literally drive around your neighborhood and make a list of small businesses you see then check to see if they have a website. Unless you live in the desert it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a main commercial street filled with small local businesses. One of them is bound to be websiteless (if such a word even exists). Put together a portfolio and knock on doors.
Get more sales and grow your business
Search in local business listings
If you are too shy to go door-to-door try searching in local business listings like the Yellow pages or Hotfrog. There are thousands of small businesses that don’t have a website. A simple strategy you can try is doing an advanced search in Google. Once you have a list of results, create a spreadsheet and copy paste your results into the sheet, now you can cold call these local web design clients to sell them local website design services.
Find local businesses in Facebook groups who don’t have websites
There are hundreds of Facebook groups where small businesses can post their service offerings to the public. You will even find some like “I Know A Guy” where the public posts something they need. Local businesses or the public will post recommendations. There are two opportunities for you here. Either you can contact local businesses who post on these groups, or you recommend yourself as a service provider.
Rank your website in top of Google Search
Why not let clients come to you instead of looking for them yourself? Getting your website to rank first in Google for keywords around web design will get you more leads. People who end up on your website from organic search results have an intent to buy. You are more likely to close a sale with a local business when they contact you first. If you don’t know how to rank your website first in Google, that’s okay, because we know how! Check out our Local SEO services here >
Pay your way to clients
For when you don’t have the time or patience to graft your way to clients, but you have deep pockets. I am over exaggerating of course, a lot of the following strategies won’t cost you an arm. It’s always a good strategy to diversify your efforts when you look for local web design clients. How to get local web design clients by paying for it.
Run local Google Ads
Google Ads is an inexpensive way to reach your audience. If you create a well planned and researched campaign and constantly optimize it you could create a money machine. When you know exactly what you pay per customer or what your CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) is, then you can easily scale your advertising. You will know how much you need to spend in ads in order to make an ROI (Return On Investment). Create a Google Ads account or check out our Paid Advertising Services here.
Retarget ads in Facebook
When you run your Google Ads campaign you should install a Facebook Pixel onto your site (Facebook’s guide to set up a pixel). The pixel will track every visitor that comes to your website through ads. With this you can create a Facebook ads campaign that target only the people that visited your website from a Google Ad, but did not contact you. Check out this useful guide by Krista Krumina >
Buy local web design leads
Some SEO’s make it their living to rank websites on the first page of Google with the intent to generate leads and sell them to local businesses. You can easily find them by searching for “buy local web design leads”. Often these leads can be bogus, so be careful. You will be much better off using your money to run Google Ads.
Another better way is to establish a partnership or agreement with another bigger web design agency to take on overflow work. Initially this is how I started Kreonovo. I went to a larger agency and showed them what we can do, we came to an agreement and they sent us hundreds of clients.
